{"id":306,"date":"2006-09-11T05:41:03","date_gmt":"2006-09-11T10:41:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ocularfusion.net\/?p=306"},"modified":"2022-01-02T07:39:27","modified_gmt":"2022-01-02T12:39:27","slug":"846-am-91102","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ocularfusion.net\/?p=306","title":{"rendered":"8:46 AM 9\/11\/02"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Three thousand voices cry out in shock and awe at the mournful moment<br \/>\nA crisp, clear morning is shattered by fire and fury.<br \/>\nFrantic chatter from little wireless boxes fills the air,<br \/>\nAnd only the essentials matter now:<br \/>\n\u201cI don\u2019t want to die.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cTake care of the kids.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ll be with you always.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI just want you to know I love you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hear them even now, phantoms flitting about my head as the daily grind Halts on yet another Black Tuesday.<br \/>\nEach gently asks, \u201cRemember me?\u201d<br \/>\nThey gather round and tell their stories of life and love:<br \/>\nJohn, who loved soccer and coached his kids,<br \/>\nSuzanne, who loved her little sister with Downs,<br \/>\nMario, who considered fine wine with a good meal and the company of Friends a sacrament,<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/search\/index.ssf?\/base\/news\/1157793464116920.xml?huntsvilletimes?nlocal&#038;coll=1\"> Max*<\/a>, who loved tinkering with old Mustangs and playing the trombone.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands more come, they who loved family and friends, cold lemonade On a hot summer\u2019s day, the \u201cgood tired\u201d coming at the end of a hard Day\u2019s work, the view of a sultry sun setting from a front porch swing.<br \/>\nThey crowd around, pleading, \u201cRemember\u2026remember us!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They are angry now, and together they cry \u201cPatriot!\u201d<br \/>\nAnd from the main streets others come, from backwoods, bayous and the Bronx they answer the call, a nation\u2019s sons and daughters coming to their Mother\u2019s aid,<br \/>\nFledglings forsaking spring for a season of sacrifice.<br \/>\nAround a flag and a cross-shaped piece of steel they make their stand,<br \/>\nLearning the old, hard truth; \u201cWhere freedom is found, blood has been Shed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I push on now, as a drudge who watches epic battles raging \u2018round<br \/>\nAnd wonders what he would do should the fight come to his front door Tomorrow.<br \/>\nMy companions whisper words of comfort in my ear as they fade away:<br \/>\n\u201cBrother, to remember is to fight,<br \/>\nTo remember is to raise us from the dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"92\" height=\"184\" align=\"left\" title=\"max-hammond.jpg\" id=\"image307\" alt=\"max-hammond.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ocularfusion.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/09\/max-hammond.jpg\" \/>I composed this poem on the morning of the first anniversary of 9\/11. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.al.com\/search\/index.ssf?\/base\/news\/1157793464116920.xml?huntsvilletimes?nlocal&#038;coll=1\">Max Hammond<\/a>*was a Huntsville native and a 1982 graduate of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsv.k12.al.us\/schools\/high\/ghs\/\">Grissom High School<\/a> where my oldest son currently attends. He was a National Merit Scholar, an accomplished trombonist and earned a PhD in physics from UCLA. He was on a business trip to California aboard <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Airlines_Flight_175\">United Airlines Flight 175<\/a>, the second plane hijacked and subsequently flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
