Same Gospel?

The Last Days are in full swing at Bama.

Hypothetical question: if your only exposure to Christianity was this guy, do you think you would be interested in joining up?

Color me crazy, but somehow I think this guy might make more inroads at a college campus these days.

Two different men, two different tactics. Same Gospel?

I always enjoy people yelling at me and telling me how bad I am … I can’t wait to come back for more :0 Where do I sign up?

On the positive side, The Almighty can use anyone and anything to reach some people. He may be the enlightening path for some folks.

    Is that Jimmy Allen??? 🙂

Actually I enjoyed his class at HU my junior year.

Well, Mr. Armstrong may believe the same basic gospel as N. T. Wright, but I seriously doubt that God is pleased with what Mr. Armstrong is doing with it. Call me crazy, but I don’t think the gospel is for going around and using to bash people over the head.

Does Mark 9 have any relevance here?–“Whoever is not against us is for us?

I’m not so sure. The guy casting out demons was actually doing some good. But spreading hellfire instead of cool water probably isn’t what Jesus had in mind there.

But then again, that may be my intellectual airs kicking in, as they sometimes have the tendency to do.

Jimmy could hoop it up and really shoot the J. I played pickup against him many times in high school and college. But he could also be a fouling machine every now and then (but everyone was afraid to call it on him.)

I always wondered why there were no crack whores in downtown Tuscaloosa!

    well, he has a point.

“I just see the church as getting worldlier and worldlier,” he said. “There’s very little preaching against sin.”

And that is true. The Bible says that in the last days, many will turn from the truth, and I really believe we’re seeing it.

But I think he missed the parts where Jesus hung out with the sinners – among them, but not a part of them – so that He could reveal the Lord to them. It’s awesome for someone to be zealous for the Lord, but if it’s not tempered with Grace, it’s not godly.

If you think he’s bad, get a load of this guy. He’s actually passing himself off as the second coming….

Greg–I never played JA in anything, but I heard the stories. I did play Avon Malone in tennis regularly, and frankly, he couldn’t be trusted to call his own lines.

Sl–Now you know. Stay tuned–I’m a regular font of vital information.

Brian–thanks for the perspective. Everything is relative I guess. Here’s my favorite line: “Jesus drank wine because he didn’t have Dewar’s.”

    Heh.

I remember JA in his HU intermural jacket that he wore…sweet. I watched him play ball and he was very good for his age.

Brian: I see some of your point. There are times it seems the church is afraid to call a spade a spade (ie: homosexuality/sexual imorality), but this guy is not going about it the right way.

On the upside, it would sure make the walk through Ferg Plaza more interesting. A university should be a place where students are exposed to many different ideas and be forced to sort through the intellectual detritus which often litters the public square.

Who knows? Perhaps this will force cooler Christian heads to step it up a notch and offer a more viable, and well-rounded, version of the story.

When I was clerking in Chattanooga, we endured “the Screamer” who had a day job but who used his lunch breaks to dress down all passers-by on Market Street.

Once I was in a gaggle of law students heading off to some swank recruiting lunch, and he laid in, “OH! You lawyers! With your FANCY SHOES! Repent!”

Of all the things he could have condemned….

He must not have had anything against Italian silk suits.

Oh that’s right, you’re a liberal. And an academic to boot!
