ROAD TRIIIIP!

Road Trip.jpg

This morning, Operation Get Number One Son Out of the House, Into College and On the Road to Independent Living begins in earnest with a road trip to visit Appalachian State University, Davidson College and the University of Georgia–three colleges in three days.

Among the questions that will be answered on this trip (if not before) are:

  • Will Number One start to get a clue as to what he wants to do for college?
  • Does a 44-year-old man have what it takes to grind out a 1000 mile, 3-day road trip with two 17-year-old boys (Number One and his buddy Zac) who are armed with iPods full of high intensity, eardrum popping music?
  • Our hotel rooms have twin beds–who will get to sleep solo? (Answer: Yours truly, since I’m paying for it)
  • Will I get lost? (Answer: Most likely, and more than once)
  • Will I stop and ask for directions? (Answer: Absolutely not)
  • What will the folks at UGa say when we show up at the admissions office and yell, “Roll Tide?”

I don’t know if I’ll have internet access or time to post a report while I’m gone, but I’ll try to at least take some pictures and some mental notes for when I get back. Until then, perhaps you have some memories which you’d wish to share of your own ill-advised, but ultimately memorable excursions which were launched with the cry, “ROAD TRIIIIP!”

If so, let’s hear them.

Has he seen Searcy yet? What’s Athen, GA got that we don’t have?

Sounds like a blast. Have fun.

    Mark–

Yes, he’s been to Searcy several times and is about to have an extended stay as you well know.

Appy State was ok, especially if you want to become a ski bum (average snowfall 60″, 5 ski resorts within 20 minutes). Davidson was a small school with a big school feel–extremely cool place. I would have enrolled myself on the spot if they would have let me.

Athens, hmm, let’s see–they have a world-famous music scene, scores of bistros lining the downtown area, big-time college football, but hey, they don’t have Elrod! We do a tour in the morning, so it should be an interesting contrast to the two schools that we’ve already visited.

Here’s an interesting piece of Athens trivia. There president of UGA is Dr. Michael Adams, a Lipscomb grad and CoC guy. He lived for a time in Roanoke, Virginia and his dad was an elder in my congregation when I was growing up.

    Nancy–

We liked Davidson the best. Here’s a piece of Davidson trivia–Tony Snow, current White House spokesperson, is an alumnus.
