Interesting Religious Reads

USA Today starts the week off with two interesting religious reads.

First, a report on the growing New Sanctuary Movement, a coalition of houses of worship which is providing shelter and protection to illegal immigrants.

Second, it seems at least some boomer offspring are outdoing their parents when it comes to faith and fervor.

I find the notion that sacred space might still exist and that it might be recognized by civil authorities in this post-everything world intriguing. During the Civil War, Union cavalry soldiers commandeered local Huntsville churches to serve as stables and barracks.

Well, except for one. Above the front door of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity is a marble inscription–“Reverence My Sanctuary”–taken from Leviticus 26:2. When a Union officer read that, he refused to enter and decided to risk the wrath of his immediate superior rather than his Ultimate One. Could such a scene be repeated today? We shall see.

As to children outdoing their parents in love for and service to God–more power to ’em. But the question remains: Will they be able to do so without lapsing into that old annoying rut of judgementalism that seems to accompany just about any fundamentalist shift?

I wonder if 9/11 would’ve ever happened had we stricter immigration laws – even for the legal ones. I wonder if those providing sanctuary for those in MY Country illegally, have ever fought on foreign soil to keep their freedom.

Yes, this really is MY Country – overseen by Politicians who sometimes just don’t think.

Cg–9/11 could have likely been prevented had the CIA shared critical info on AQ hijackers whom they knew were living and training (legally) in Southern Cal with the FBI prior to the attack. As it was, they gave the info to them on 9/12.

Ed-no, but am I surprised? No again! 🙂

I don’t like fundamentalist shifts just because of that ole rut. It’s amazing how many people become Christians and give up their ability to think about issues and entertain them without necessarily accepting them. This world will be a much better place when we can all do that.

That my friend is what I like about your writings-you never give up your ability to think and you certainly stimulate and entertain many thoughts. Keep on going-you are a real writa!

No, it most certainly didn’t, as your haunting photo amply shows.
